The South Puget Sound Community College (SPSCC) is holding its annual Martin Luther King Jr. event with distinguished leader and equity advocate Dr. Thelma Jackson as the keynote speaker.
The event, which is set for Friday, Jan. 17, 2025, at 7:30 p.m. at the Kenneth J. Minnaert Center for the Arts main stage, will reflect on the ongoing work of equity and justice in the community.
“With over five decades of experience, Dr. Thelma Jackson will share her perspective in her keynote address ‘Answering the Call to Greatness’ followed by an audience dialogue exploring civic engagement and justice,” a press release about the event stated.
Jackson is set to discuss how the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) of Thurston County promotes equity, economic empowerment and inclusivity, prioritizing civil rights within the community.

Dr. Thelma Jackson is a respected community leader and advocate with a career spanning over 50 years.
Jackson has served on the North Thurston School Board for two decades, was the president of The Evergreen State College Board of Trustees, and was one of the founding members of the Black Alliance of Thurston County.
Jackson retired in 2020 from Foresight Consultants, a firm that works with educational issues, equity, diversity, policymaking, strategic planning and executive coaching.
The news release stated that Jackson continues to drive impactful change as the administrator of the Northwest Institute for Leadership and Change, and has published "Blacks in Thurston County, Washington, 1950-1975: A Community Album" in 2022.
A celebrated historian and author, Jackson has chronicled the rich history of the Black community in the region. She currently serves as treasurer and board member for the NAACP of Thurston County.
