Changes to the housing code contemplated in Olympia

Next Monday the Olympia Planning Commission will meet to discuss possible changes to the housing code regarding accessory dwelling units, duplexes, triplexes and courtyard apartments.

Here are some of the changes Commission staff will recommend: 

  • Regardless of the size of the primary residence, any accessory dwelling unit (ADU) can be up to 800 square feet
  • The height of ADUs which are not attached to the primary dwelling should be raised from 16 feet to 24 feet.
  • The requirements for additional parking should be eliminated.
  • The requirement that the property owner live on-site should be eliminated.
