Alauna Carstens of The Evergreen State College set a national qualifying standard, as she led the rest of the Geoducks in opening the indoor track and field season at the University of Washington (UW) Indoor Preview on Jan. 17 and the Mile City Indoor in Seattle on Jan. 18.
The junior runner got her National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) “A" national qualifying result in the women's 3,000-meter run with a time of 9:56.75,. That was just below the 9:57.50 standard set by NAIA.
Carstens placed 38th out of 87 athletes in the UW Indoor Preview at the Dempsey Indoor Track and Field facility.
Corona Parker and Max Baeder, tied or set school records in their own events at the UW Indoor Preview.
Parker tied her indoor school record by clearing 1.55 meters (5 feet, 1 inch) in the high jump, placing 10th place in the event.
Baeder broke a 14-year school record in the men’s 3,000-meter run after finishing the course in 8:58.98, about six seconds better than the previous record set by Brian Rakestraw in 2009. He placed 74th overall.
The following day, the Geoducks competed in the Mile City Indoor meet, at the same venue. The event featured 216 athletes in the women's 1-mile run and 449 athletes in the men's 1-mile run.
Sophomore runner Rowan Hicks led the Geoducks in the men’s race, as he completed the mile in 4:27.52, good for 94th place. Baeder clocked in at 4:36.12.
Also competing for the Geoducks in the men’s race were Harlan Estrada (4:44.14) Luis Esquivel (4:44.18), Osvaldo Calderon (4:44.95) and Charles Norris (5:01.30).
Evergreen’s Madison Palek registered a 5:43.81 in the women's race, while Mara Schwenneker concluded the race in 5:49.20.
The Evergreen State College track teams will compete on Sunday, Jan. 26, at the Portland Indoor #1 competition, which is hosted by the University of Portland at the Chiles Center.
