Called by the sirens?

Celebrate servicemen at the Port this Friday

Port of Olympia officials are reassuring community members of the noise that will be coming this Friday evening at the docks.

“When you see lights flashing and hear sirens sounding on the Port of Olympia docks on Sept. 9, 7:45 a.m. to 9:00 a.m., there’s no need to be alarmed!,” the Port assured. “It is not an emergency, but rather a celebration.”

Friday is the 60th Annual Foofaraw, reminded the Port, where ships carrying military personnel will be greeted by the flag and siren and horn greetings from Port staff, first responders and other well-wishers.

Active duty servicemen will also be ferried by the Thurston County Chamber and the Olympia Yacht Club to the Port-owned Island Home, where they will receive a reception.

“The Port is proud to support this event and honor the many active-duty and retired military personnel that call Thurston County home,” it said in a news release.
