An Olympia-based organization is calling on community members to celebrate a treaty to ban nuclear weapons.
The Olympia Coalition to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (OCANW) is inviting the public to commemorate the second anniversary of the United Nations ratification of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) on Sunday, January 22.
According to the group’s press release, OCANW will be holding a peace vigil on Sunday from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the intersection of West Harrison & Division on Olympia’s west side. Along with signs and banners, participants will be ringing bells to mark the occasion.
TPNW “includes a comprehensive set of prohibitions on participating in any nuclear weapon activities,” according to the treaty website. “The Treaty also prohibits the deployment of nuclear weapons on national territory and the provision of assistance to any State in the conduct of prohibited activities.”
Interested community members can contact OCANW through Glen Anderson at glenanderson@integra.net or (360) 491-9093.
