Accused would-be burglar bungles break-in, then crashes stolen truck

The owners of a local hobby shop contacted authorities after watching via remote security camera an attempted break-in as a would-be burglar damaged their store, on Mon., Aug. 23, just after 6 a.m.

Jason Allen Goudy, 40, of Tumwater, allegedly connected nylon tow straps from the stolen truck he was driving to the front glass doors of Bigfoot Hobbies at 7837 Martin Way E in Lacey, in an attempt to force the doors open. There were tire marks on the concrete pad in front of the store and seven strike points on the glass, where the glass was reinforced and stronger than typical storefront glass, according to the police report. The damage was estimated at over $5,000.

Thurston Sheriff’s deputies arrived to witness Goudy speeding away from the parking lot of Bigfoot Hobbies, accelerating at a high rate of speed.

Goudy’s vehicle collided with two other vehicles at the intersection of Martin Way and Marvin Rd SE, where Goudy and an unidentified accomplice fled on foot.

Eyewitnesses pointed out to deputies that Goudy and his accomplice had run into the parking lot containing Home Depot, Costco and Best Buy retailers. Goudy separated from his accomplice, running across two parking lots.

Deputies caught up with Goudy near the Arirang Asian Market at 7940 Martin Way E, clearly winded and physically exhausted. Deputies arrested Goudy without further incident.

Goudy stated that he was sweaty due to the heavy running and use of methamphetamines earlier in the day.

A search of the stolen red Toyota Tacoma Goudy was driving revealed several tools that might be used to break into buildings such as an electric saw. It also contained a backpack; in the backpack was a clear plastic baggy of what deputies say was crystal methamphetamine. Also in the backpack was Goudy’s wallet, with his photo identification.

Goudy was arrested and booked into the Thurston County Jail for burglary, possession of a stolen vehicle, malicious mischief, two counts of hit-and-run, and obstructing a law enforcement officer for fleeing the scene of a vehicle collision.
