Caught at 3:15 a.m. wearing an orange hard hat to disguise himself as a construction worker, a local man was arrested for possession of stolen property by Olympia police assisting the Washington State Patrol on Fri., Sept. 24.

Shane Aaron Connor, 39, of Olympia, was contacted by an Olympia police officer in a parking lot near the Natural Resources Building, on his hands and knees as he dug for items underneath an attached toolbox in the bed of a black Dodge pickup truck.

OPD announced “Police” upon contact, but Connor merely sat up, looked at OPD, and didn’t say anything. A second “Police” announcement was issued by OPD, but Connor again said nothing, and climbed out of the truck, with a kitchen knife and a gas can.

Connor then started digging through his pockets and had to be asked three times to stop. The items Connor removed from his pockets included a U.S. passport, a school ID for a female, and a W-2 form.

When questioned further, Connor produced a fanny pack from underneath his shirt, which contained a VISA card and more tax information, belonging to other people. He claimed to have found the items on the ground, with the intention of turning it over to law enforcement.

Connor told OPD that two other guys had stolen his bike and personal items, and thrown his stuff in the back of the Dodge truck. When questioned, Connor couldn’t clarify what was exactly thrown into the truck.

The W-2 form belonged to a woman who had her vehicle prowled two days prior at the Viking Tavern in Lacey. The woman stated that she had about $2,000 in other items stolen during that vehicle prowl.

Connor was booked on two counts of possession of stolen property, processed into the Olympia Jail.
