Saint Martin's baseball ends season on high note with win vs Lutes on home turf

Despite losing their Conference Championship postseason slot, the Saint Martin’s University baseball team closed the 2024 baseball season with a thrilling 4-3 win against Pacific Lutheran University at a rainy Saints Field on Sunday afternoon, April 28.

The Saints had a relatively lousy baseball season this year, entering their final game with a dismal 16-34 win-loss record, including 10-22 against schools in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC).

Fortunately, they showed up, albeit struggled at first, before a spirited comeback from the boys in black and white provided a bittersweet ending as a silver lining to end a somewhat forgettable season.

It was a nervy start for both teams playing under rainy conditions on the field before the Lutes opened the scoring in the fourth after PLU’s Christian Cambridge singled to a shortstop and advanced to a second to push a waiting Brody Phinney from second base to a run.

But the Saints did not take long to respond. They equalized after Charlie Johns hit an RBI to give the run to a waiting Alohi Arrechi from third base.

The sixth inning became crucial for the Saints as they made two runs to hit a two-point advantage. SMU started proceedings with Michael Grubb singling to the shortstop to give the run to a sliding Kyle Schabot to make it 2-1. Zen Stazkow makes it three right after the second run after a Colin Bell single to the left-center forced Stazkow back to home base to double their advantage.

PLU tried to come back and evened the scores in the eighth as Ashton Barton hit a double to the left field and RBI-ed to Aaron Barber and Brayden Adcox to make it 3-3 after the top of the 8th.

In the final inning, Arrechi hit a single to give Colin Bell a free run, sealing the Saints' win in their final game of this baseball season.
