Intercity Transit (IT) won two top awards at the American Public Transportation Association (APTA) 2024 International Bus Roadeo competition, which was held last weekend in Portland, Oregon.

“A bus Roadeo is a competitive event where bus operators and maintenance teams demonstrate their skills in driving, safety, and vehicle maintenance,” IT detailed in a press release.

“Participants navigated obstacle courses, performed simulated driving scenarios, and showcased their ability to conduct thorough vehicle inspections, diagnose mechanical issues, and complete maintenance tasks efficiently and safely,” IT added.

The Bus Roadeo, which made its comeback after the five-year pandemic hiatus, was participated by 390 contenders vying for top honors, including 76 bus drivers, 46 maintenance teams, and 38 combined teams.

Rob Wood, IT's bus operator, won first place in the driving competition, while the IT maintenance team, comprising Richelle Loken, Jonathan Reynolds, and Sean Malay, secured the top spot in the USSC bus inspection category.

Emily Bergkamp, General Manager of Intercity Transit, expressed pride in the achievements of the winning individuals and the entire organization, stating, “Our entire organization is extremely proud of Rob, Richelle, Jonathan, and Sean for these achievements and celebrates all our staff who participate and coordinate these local Roadeo events throughout the year. Additionally, it’s important to recognize the family support that goes into preparing for and competing in these events.”

For Wood, this triumph marks a repeat victory, having secured first place in the international competition in 2019. For the IT maintenance team, this award represents a personal best achievement.

Intercity Transit’s representatives have competed and won at regional and state levels over the past year before competing on the international stage.
